30 Days with Office 365 for Educators - Day 1

09/15/2014

Day 1 - To the Cloud!

Eastern Illinois University is currently in the process of moving all faculty, staff, and students to Microsoft Office 365. All EIU student accounts were migrated from our on-premises servers to Office 365 back in June for all official email correspondence for students

Plans are now underway to migrate all faculty/staff accounts to Office 365 in the October 2014 time-frame.

Last week I received my official EIU Faculty/Staff Office365 account!

I have had a demo account for Office 365 since May so I have had some time to explore its many features. Our Information Systems department is currently recruiting early adopters to work out any migration issues so I eagerly volunteeredI have been using cloud-based products for many years, including Google apps, and know the many benefits offered. However, the benefits are largely hidden for those who have never used a cloud-based service before.

Here is how Microsoft describes Office 365:

Think of it as your familiar Office, only better. Office 365 is the same Office you already know and use every day. And then some. Because Office 365 is powered by the cloud, you can get to your applications and files from virtually anywhere—PC, Mac, and select mobile devices—and they're always up to date. Same goes for updates to features—you get them automatically.

Our students were migrated to Office 365 back in May and June so they have had some time to utilize Office 365 but the vast majority seem unaware of the many benefits of Office 365 besides email. The vast majority of students simply login and use it for email access using the Outlook Web App. I suspect this will also be true for faculty/staff users as well, thus the need for this "30 Days" series.

So, over the coming weeks I will be posting about the possibilities of using Office 365 in the classroom for teaching and learning purposes. These are exciting times and now that the entire university will be using Office 365 the collaboration possibilities are immense.

Stay tuned for more.

Keep on Learning,
