Day 20 – The Magic of Co-authoring a Word Online Document

10/10/2014

30 Days with Office 365 for Educators - Day 20

Co-authoring a Word Online document is one of the first transformational experiences a new Office 365 user may have. Many users of Office 365 will never get to this level of productivity as some only use the Outlook Web App for email within Office 365. If you are a reader of this blog series you already know there are many things in Office 365 beyond email, so read on.

Today’s post will open up new possibilities previously impossible before cloud computing came along. These new possibilities are worthy of exploring further including many different things that Office 365 now makes possible on a daily basis. Today we will look at the magic of the Word Online app and co-authoring.

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, co-authoring has been available for some time now with Office 365 online apps as well as Google Docs. Having the ability to share a document with others while giving them editing rights redefines the way we can use Office 365.

Being able to edit a document at the same time with another person is magical. The other person could be in the same room or across the globe. It opens up all kinds of possibilities for sharing of content and collaboration possibilities with many other individuals.

Co-authoring is one of the “different” things made possible by Office 365 that is transformational and different from traditional computing workflows.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, if that is true then a video demonstration must be worth a million.

Below is an embedded video from the Instructional Technology Center’s YouTube Channel. This was done with the help of my graduate assistant, Katy, and we used two different computers to edit the same document at the same time.

If you have an Office 365 account (all EIU faculty, staff, and students now do) you can do this today!

Welcome to the magical world of collaborative editing.

Keep on Learning,
Tom Grissom, Ph.D.
